Wavelength – Complete Game Guide

Are you on the same wavelength? Learn all the rules, strategies, and examples for this unique team game.

What Is Wavelength?

Wavelength is a fascinating cooperative party game that asks the question: How well do you really know your fellow players? The game is based on a simple but brilliant concept: a spectrum between two opposites is displayed (for example, "hot" to "cold," "underrated" to "overrated," or "good" to "bad"), along with a secret target position on this spectrum.

One player - the "clue giver" - sees the secret target position and must give a single clue that leads their team to guess the correct spot on the spectrum. The challenge is finding a clue that is clear enough to point in the right direction while also communicating the exact position on the scale. It's a game about empathy, communication, and the ability to put yourself in others' shoes.

PartyBox offers Wavelength in two modes: In single-device mode, one device is passed around, which is perfect for spontaneous rounds. In multi-device mode, each player can participate through their own device, ideal for larger groups.

Detailed Rules

1

Players split into two teams (or play together in single-device mode).

2

One player becomes the clue giver and sees the spectrum with the secret target position.

3

The spectrum shows two opposites at the ends (e.g., "boring" and "exciting").

4

The clue giver gives ONE clue - a word, a name, a concept - that points to the target position.

5

The team discusses the clue and collectively chooses a position on the spectrum.

6

The actual target position is revealed and points are awarded.

7

The closer the guess is to the target, the more points are earned.

8

Roles rotate and the next team (or clue giver) takes their turn.

9

The game goes for multiple rounds - the team with the most points wins!

Examples to Understand

"Cold" ←→ "Hot"

Target position: 75% (quite hot)

Clue: "Sauna"

A sauna is definitely hot, but not the hottest thing in the world (like lava). "Sauna" places well at about 70-80% on the hot side.

"Underrated" ←→ "Overrated"

Target position: 30% (rather underrated)

Clue: "Libraries"

Libraries are underrated by most people - they offer much more than just books. Giving a clue that communicates "rather underrated but not totally unknown" is the art of the game.

"Easy" ←→ "Difficult"

Target position: 90% (very difficult)

Clue: "Quantum physics"

Quantum physics is one of the most difficult subjects - a clear clue for a position near the "Difficult" end.

Strategies for Clue Givers

Think about your audience

What would YOUR team understand from the clue? A clue that makes sense to you might be confusing to others. Choose well-known references.

Use the full scale

A clue for position 50% should be something exactly in the middle. "Lukewarm water" for "Cold ←→ Hot" at 50% is better than "Summer."

Avoid too-obvious clues

For "Fast ←→ Slow" with target 95% (very slow), "Snail" is too obvious for 100%. Choose something like "Postal mail" for 90-95%.

Be specific

Abstract clues are harder to place. "Wood-fired pizza" is better than "Food" for a heat spectrum.

Know the extremes

If the target position is near an end, be bold with your clue. At position 5% on "hot ←→ cold," say "Antarctica," not "Autumn."

Strategies for Guessers

Discuss as a team

Share your interpretations of the clue. Different perspectives help find the right position.

Think like the clue giver

What would THIS person have meant by the clue? Do you know their preferences, humor, or way of thinking?

Compare with the extremes

Ask yourselves: Is the clue closer to one end or the other? Then estimate from there.

Dare to be extreme

Many teams tend toward the middle. If the clue clearly points in one direction, boldly go to the edge.
